Glencoe – Where Love Never Grows Old

Leaving the train from Edinburgh to Glasgow, we hurried through the station to catch our bus to Glencoe.

As the city faded behind us, the bus wound its way along twisting mountain roads, eventually swallowed by towering peaks, ancient forests, and crystal-clear rivers. The scenery was so breathtaking that during the entire four-hour ride, I didn’t dare close my eyes for a single second.

Camera clutched tightly in hand, I darted back and forth between empty bus seats to capture the views, completely unfazed by the puzzled looks from fellow passengers. I did not care. My only fear was that I might never make it back to this place again.

A Love Story in the Highlands

When the bus finally pulled up to our stop, Glencoe greeted us as romantic as a love story, and far more stunning than anything anyone had ever described.

We wandered across a wide, open meadow. A few weathered wooden benches were thoughtfully scattered nearby – perfect perches for taking in the endless stretch of lush green. Beyond the valley, the sea met rolling mountains wrapped in deep shades of green, their highest peaks still dusted with the faint white of summer snow. We sat down, soaking up the gentle afternoon sun as a cool ocean breeze drifted through the glen.

Not far from us sat an elderly English couple. The wife leaned her head softly against her husband’s shoulder while he ran a weathered, veiny hand through her hair, holding her close. They didn’t say a word. They simply sat in serene silence, letting their gaze drift with the gentle rhythm of the waves against the shore.

They had grown up, fallen in love, and married right here in this valley. After living elsewhere for decades, they had returned in their twilight years, just the two of them and the Glencoe of their youth. Looking at them, who could ever argue that the past is merely the past?

Quiet Lives by the Shore

Later, we crossed to the other side of the meadow, following a narrow path lined with wild white flowers toward a small cottage by the shore. The tide was out under the sunny sky, leaving old, weather-beaten boats resting on the exposed seabed. The house stood so still that we assumed it was abandoned.

As we were taking photos, a pickup truck pulled into the drive. An elderly man stepped out and offered us a warm, gentle smile.

He told us the cottage was his home. His wife was resting inside, recovering from an illness, and he had just returned from buying her some food. It was just the two of them, no children, no bustle, just a quiet, peaceful life together. Seeing the genuine happiness radiant on his face as he cared for the woman he loved, no one would ever think to ask if he felt lonely.

Where Love Remains

Glencoe seems to hold and nourish only the loves that have weathered the test of time – bound by people who need nothing more in this world than each other.

If you visit Glencoe, you will rarely spot young people. Perhaps places so quiet and remote can seldom hold onto hearts brimming with restless dreams and high ambitions.

Instead, Glencoe seems to hold and nourish only the loves that have weathered the test of time—bound by people who need nothing more in this world than each other.
